After reading all the glowing reviews, I decided to spend the big bucks on what appeared to be the most wonderful little grill. Since I live in Nevada and the shipping origin was Arizona, I expected it to arrive within 4 days tops. I am sad to report that my first grill arrived 5 days later than their projected date (it took 10 days) and upon opening the box, I immediately saw a crack completely through the fire bowl in the lower right bottom (as you look at it)just as Bob P. in July, 2009, reported. Dismayed, I contacted Amazon, explained why FedEx does not work as a shipper where I live (middle of Nevada desert), requested UPS or USPS instead, and was emailed a shipping label to return the grill. Amazon stated they would ship out a replacement grill immediately.

I was delighted to have grill #2 arrive sooner than expected (3 days) and have it delivered by UPS. Delight turned to dismay again as I saw yet another crack in exactly the same place as the previous grill. Again, I contacted Amazon and sent them a photo showing exactly where and what the crack looked like. I was emailed a label, and made the 90 mile trek to the post office to get the grill back in the mail. I had indicated to Amazon that I was up for giving it one more try; if the third grill arrived damaged, I would be ready for a refund.

Shortly after I sent that email, Amazon contacted me and stated that since I had received two damaged grills, they would refund my cost since it was likely another grill would arrive damaged. Perhaps they opened a few boxes and examined the grills? Maybe the shipment they received from Lodge was all defective? I don't know.

What I can tell you is that I decided to take another leap and order the exact same grill from Ace Hardware. It arrived on exactly the day they projected, cost $20.00 less, and arrived from New York completely intact. So, if anyone orders this grill from Amazon (shipped from Goodyear, AZ), be sure to check it out carefully when it arrives.

This new model is a must have for serious grillers who feel cramped on their old 22.5" like I did. I never had quite enough room for proper indirect cooking or for creating the necessary heat zones. Many times I was forced to use my 6 burner Gas Weber Summit for larger BBQ parties. On the 26" I cooked chicken for 15 last week with room to spare. Problem solved. Don't bother buying the smaller model if you are serious.

Pros:

1. Lots of grill space for cooking tons of food.
2. Room for proper indirect cooking with larger items like Roasts or a whole Turkey
3. Better thermometer than my old 22.5" One-Touch Gold
4. Plastic handle on the lid vent so it can be adjusted when hot.
5. Reinforced grate to hold up the coals. Much better design
6. Stainless Steel cooking grill is much easier to clean and will last much longer than the chrome plated grill on smaller models

Cons:

1. Lid is large diameter and heavy, Be careful slinging it around like the smaller model. Burned my forearm the first day, learned my lesson.
2. Legs are flimsy like smaller model, but this grill is much heavier. I wonder how long they will last. Appear to made of the same thin aluminum.
3. Natural wood charcoal unburned "bits" small enough to fall through the grill, but large enough to lodge in the vents will prevent adjustment, cleaning or closure until they burn or are removed. Forcing will damage the cleaning blades. I am trying different brands of charcoal. I may also add another coal grill at 90° to see if it helps. I am not a big fan of molded briquets which don't have this problem.
4. Does not fit in a passenger car like the 22.5 or smaller could. Now I have an excuse not to loan it to friends for their parties :¬)
5. Wish they made a 26" Performer Model with Propane for lighting coals and the built in work table.

I have been smoking various meets with the kettle ove the years. Biggest problem was temperature control, with Weber sticking at around 275 with lots of adjustments and some significant fluctuations 240 to 320 after constant acjusting.

Smokenator nailed the temp to 230 with minimal initial adjustments. My only problem was the cut of meat I selected for my first run with the Smokenator. Had a thick cut brisket and after 6 hours temp was only up to 140. I am sure if I had another 2 to 3 hours, it would have been perfect, as it was, flavor was great but just a little tough.
I had to refuel once during the process as coals ran low and temp dropped, however, based upon the instructions that was to be expected.

My wife and I were looking for a new grill this summer. Firstly, I was committed to charcoal. So, I thought I'd get another Weber. After reading enough favorable reviews of the Char-Griller Patio Pro, I had to go have a look. From a usability and "design" perspective, it absolutely slays the Weber. How annoying is it to have to set your lid AND grate on the ground in order to get a fire going?

Now, before I anger all the Weber-faithful, let me say, Weber makes THE BEST charcoal chimney starter available. Buy one with your Char-Griller and NO OTHER. Fill one with ALL NATURAL LUMP charcoal, stuff a sheet of newspaper underneath, light it and walk away. By the time you've prepped your food, the coals are ready to be dumped, for cooking

Assembly is a pain, but frankly, a good exercise in problem-solving while working with your hands. I encourage you to take the extra expense/effort to polyurethane all the wood, and you might as well buy a can of high-temp black paint to keep handy for when the factory enamel blisters and peels (not been an issue for me after a summer of use, but still....)

My other upgrades I'm intending include a pizza stone to fit on the grate, a charcoal tub to attach to the lower rack (otherwise, it's pretty useless). And I'd like to figure out a way to mount a thermometer on the lid.

Getting home, my husband immediately began to assemble it. Because my husband believes that assembly directions are a last-resort, we did not discover that the three support-brackets were missing until it was nearly assembled and therefore impossible to return to the store.

Following the instructions written on a large paper AND within the instruction booklet saying "Missing Parts? Call Us!" we called the 800-number which sent us to an automated "leave your name & number here" message that said we would be put on an automatic callback queue. Two weeks later with NO callback, we tried again and found that there is NO way to get to an actual human via this phone number - OR the three other numbers listed on their website. We then tried using their email customer service... which was also ignored for an entire week.

After a week of no email response, we sent a complaint to the BBB. Miraculously, within a day we had a phone call! We were not home when they called, but there was a complete message on our answering machine describing how to go about faxing our request to the company - which we did the next morning. One week later, I received a second phone call. This CS rep had no record of our faxed request. I immediately faxed a second request directly to her along with the initial request & confirmation of receipt sent by their company a week prior, and somehow THEN they were able to find the initial fax request but had no idea how it could have been "lost."

One week later, after having the smoker for a full month the brackets finally came in. I must admit that the smoker is WONDERFUL! It works well, seems as if it will last for quite some time, and grills & smokes perfectly. Truly, I love the grill and the smoker is fast becoming our favorite way to cook meat & veggies simultaneously!
