Getting home, my husband immediately began to assemble it. Because my husband believes that assembly directions are a last-resort, we did not discover that the three support-brackets were missing until it was nearly assembled and therefore impossible to return to the store.

Following the instructions written on a large paper AND within the instruction booklet saying "Missing Parts? Call Us!" we called the 800-number which sent us to an automated "leave your name & number here" message that said we would be put on an automatic callback queue. Two weeks later with NO callback, we tried again and found that there is NO way to get to an actual human via this phone number - OR the three other numbers listed on their website. We then tried using their email customer service... which was also ignored for an entire week.

After a week of no email response, we sent a complaint to the BBB. Miraculously, within a day we had a phone call! We were not home when they called, but there was a complete message on our answering machine describing how to go about faxing our request to the company - which we did the next morning. One week later, I received a second phone call. This CS rep had no record of our faxed request. I immediately faxed a second request directly to her along with the initial request & confirmation of receipt sent by their company a week prior, and somehow THEN they were able to find the initial fax request but had no idea how it could have been "lost."

One week later, after having the smoker for a full month the brackets finally came in. I must admit that the smoker is WONDERFUL! It works well, seems as if it will last for quite some time, and grills & smokes perfectly. Truly, I love the grill and the smoker is fast becoming our favorite way to cook meat & veggies simultaneously!

The cover fits tightly but it is a tad short to cover the legs all the way down to their tips with its strong elastic edge. No big deal, the cast iron legs are not in danger of rusting out. I've had mine out on the patio in the Kansas sun for two summers and it has faded to a gray color on top, still black on the bottom, no big deal from my view either. But one little annoyance is that the seams on the fabric (all the way around the top edge when it is on) leak. So in a heavy rain water will drip inside and lead to surface rusting. When I first purchased this grill and then for the next year or two I also thought it was terrific. Then things started to go haywire.

The lock that keeps the top fastened to the bottom was poorly designed. It eventually loosened and now one either had to hold the two pieces together or put an elastic ("bungee") cord around it or it will comes apart.

Next, the grease cup caught fire. If that wasn't bad enough, it is located right by the propane cylinder. We were able to extinguish the fire before it heated the propane bottle but not before the grease cdup melted.

THEN, while pre-heating it, the center of one of the grills completely melted through. I read the instructions before using te unit and I recall it saying not to COOK with the lid closed. I have absolutely no recollection of it saying not to PRE-HEAT with the lid closed. Net result: Another grill for $33.

As I can't readily locate my instruction manual, I'll need to find one online or somewhere to see if there is a warning about that. If so, then it's my fault. If not, then Coleman has a potential disaster on it's hands.

In any event, I've reported it to the Consumer Product Safety Commission after having gotten no satisfaction from Coleman other than them saying "the lid isn't supposed to be down."

If you buy one, make sure EVERYBODY who uses it knows that under no circumstances ever put the lid down while the flame is on. They are intended to increase and enhance the smoke. To use them correctly, you soak a large handful for about 1/2 hour. Just as I'm putting my pork shoulder on the smoker, I sprinkle these on top and around the edges of my mesquite hardwood coal. In combination, they provide a fantastic, balanced smoke.

Keep in mind that pork (ribs or shoulder) only absorb smoke in the first 2-3 hours. There is no need as the other reviewer suggested to constantly add these chips. One large soaked handful combined with mesquite coal and/or hardwood chunks, another smaller handful an hour later to keep the smoke steady and you're fine. However, when you consider that the only significant differences between this grill and the same Silver line grill are: 2X the price for the Gold line, an Al ash catcher on the Gold (that should come on the Silver, too), and the trap doors that allow you add more coals on the Gold w/o removing the cooking grate...what Weber charges for the two "improvements" is obscene. These cannot possably add more than $10 to their cost of production...doubling the price on the entire grill is...gouging.
